The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks.
An ancient conflict is being fought in the shadows
of our modern society. An international force
connecting the topmost members of the scientific
and political communities, employing superior
surveillance technology, seeks to monitor and
control our world. A small group of enlightened
beings--and their protectors--will risk their
lives to fight for freedom.
SFBC.com Review
Maya is hiding in plain sight in London. The
attractive 26-year-old designer has abandoned
the merciless violence of her father’s world,
instead choosing to change her identity and live
a normal life. But Maya comes from a long line
of people who call themselves Harlequins—a fiercely
devoted group of warriors willing to sacrifice
their lives to protect a select few….
Brothers living in Los Angeles, Gabriel and Michael
Corrigan have been shaped since childhood by stories
that their father was a Traveler, one of a small
band of prophets born with the ability to cross
over to other realms and usher change into the
world. The Corrigans, who may have inherited their
father’s gifts—and who may be the last surviving
Travelers—have always protected themselves by
living “off the grid,” invisible to the intricate
surveillance networks that monitor people in our
modern society.
Maya learns that the brothers are in grave danger
from the Tabula—a group of men who fear the power
of the Travelers and have hunted them for generations.
The Tabula are determined to impose order on the
world by invisibly controlling it; the Harlequins’
practice of randomness and the Travelers’ strange
inborn ability to leave the system and return
to challenge the status quo are an intolerable
threat.
Though she was trained to fight as a young girl,
Maya is reluctant to go back to the cold and solitary
Harlequin existence—until she finds her father
dead at the hands of the enemy. Aware that the
Tabula is looking for her, Maya flies to California
to look for the brothers, but a ruthless mercenary
named Nathan Boone is searching, too. Removing
her mask of civility, she takes up the battle
her father lived to fight—a path so dangerous,
with stakes so high, it might well end up destroying
the world. (Approx. 400 pp.)
