East Coast Hobby Show 2003
The East Coast Hobby Show was advertised as trains, r/c cars,
boats, planes, models, miniatures, comics, collectibles and
more. But only some of that was correct. The show is overall
basically a train and radio control vehicle show which included
a very small subgroup of the other items listed.
Of interest to people outside of the world of trains, miniatures
and R/C there was the Ultarama stand. Ultarama is an
up and coming company who is making a name for themselves
in the action figure world with their great display units.
Their system allows collectors and kids to create great dioramas
with almost any action figure under eight inches tall. Along
with their basic sci-fi scenes two new scenes were unveiled
at this show, another lighter sci-fi background and an excellent
superheroes city skyline background. The latter is perfect
for all those cool new Justice League figures hitting the
stores now.
Ultarama was also one of the very few stands to offer any
type of collectible besides miniatures and diecast cars. As
well as offering their display systems for sale they had several
different types of action figures available which included
Star Wars and Playmates Star Trek figures. Both are a perfect
match for the Ultarama.
Visit their website www.ultarama.com
for more information or to order your action figures display
system today.
Next to the Ultarama stand was Destination Entertainment,
a marketing and design company for the publishing and collectibles
industries. They offered many of the comics they have worked
with; I Dream of Jeanie, Lethargic Lad, The Munsters, VIP
and others. They offered several comics and collectibles for
sale.
The main attraction was their fantasy statues the newest
of which is based on the Heavy Metal covers. Show visitors
were treated to a look at the prototypes of the "Red
Stacy" statue one was painted while the other was unpainted.
This statue was available for pre-order and will be limited
to 1500 pieces. Fantasy collectors will want to get their
hands on this one. The sultry warrior depicted in this statue
is based on the art of Alex Horley of the model Stacy E. Walker.
Destination Entertainment also had two versions of their
other statue available at the show. Vladimira is an "exquisite
3-dimensional portrayal of the Scion of Dracula". She
was available in both a regular and special crimson editions.
The Vladimira statue is very limited with the regular edition
limited to 500 pieces and the crimson edition is limited to
only 75 pieces.
Destination Entertainment does not yet have a website, but
when they do head on over for these statues and other great
collectible items. Stacy E. Walker's home on the web is at
www.stacyewalker.com.
One other point of interest was the Amazing Figure
Modeler stand. Amazing Figure Modeler is a great magazine
featuring tips, hints and resources for the sci-fi, horror
and fantasy modeler or collector. They had many model kits
for sale form the flying saucer from Forbidden Planet to the
gillman from The Creature from the Black Lagoon. Most of the
available models were either science fiction or horror related.
Also at their stand was a working artist who was working
on painting resin busts of Frankenstein, Nosferatu and The
Phantom of the Opera while and another person was working
on piecing together what appeared to be a 12" or 18"
resin kit of Ray Harryhausen's Ymir from 20 Million Miles
to Earth.
In addition to the models they had their magazines and videos
for sale as well as some of the X-Plus Harryhausen collectibles.
You can find Amazing Figure Modeler on the web at www.amazingmodeler.com
and X-Plus at www.xplususa.com.
The remainder of the show had R/C cars, planes and boats
plus train miniatures [I found a nice little cemetery that
will work somewhere in my horror collection], NASCAR models,
military models & miniatures and of course train, trains
and more trains. [The pictures below feature the train display
from Bachmann Industries. The details were just amazing and
I just wanted to share it with you. If interested in trains
you can find more information out on their site at www.bachmanntrains.com.]
