Anne Manx and the Black Knight is an audio drama produced by The Radio Repertory Company of America.
Anne Manx is a spacefaring private eye played by Claudia Christian. Yes, that Claudia. The Claudia. She played Ivanova in Babylon 5. Remember that show? Iconic science fiction TV right there, but I digress.
She has been playing the role of Anne Manx for quite a few years now and Anne Manx and the Black Knight is the latest addition to the series of full cast audio dramas. It is a full radio dramatization with good acting, music, and sound effects. Not just someone reading the story to you.
While this is set in the future and on other planets, the heart of this drama is still a noir PI story. I even found myself picturing this in black and white in my head.
In the Black Knight Anne gets injured and is carried around most of the time by a robot, which is called a drone in the story. I found this rather confusing because we have little flying drones all over the place these days it was hard for me to switch that in my brain to android. I kept picturing her in a flying chair of sorts. Which may have been a cool idea accept for the fact that the drone is one of the main characters in the story.
Anne is hired by a dame (sorry couldn’t help myself) to find the gold and figure out who did the murdering all the while trying not to get killed herself.
At times the dialog is hokey, but that is all part of the charm of this noir scifi radio drama about a galactic gal detective. Even with the hokey dialog this was a fun world to get lost in during my commute and I look forward to more adventures with Anne.
