Star Trek Movie Costume SpockI know I have said this before and I will say it again. Costumes are not just for Halloween people! The Star Trek movie premiere is coming up at warp speed and you need to order your costumes ASAP if you want them to beam into your home before May 17th when the new crew of the Enterprise hits the big screen once again.

I recently had the opportunity to review one of the new movie costumes made by Rubies costumes thanks to BuyCostumes.com. Rubies is pretty much a household name when it comes to making quality costumes for any genre and budget. The Star Trek costume are available in three price ranges and each price hike increases the quality of the costumes.

Take the Spock uniform I received. It was the standard which is just the shirt with printed on delta shield and rank stripes on the arm the price for this costume runs about $35-40 while the Grand Heritage (top of the line) comes with the black shirt that goes under the uniform shirt and a pin-on delta shield and runs about $100.

The new movie brought us a new material with a pattern of delta shields in the weave. Of course the costume can only mimic this by printing the pattern onto the material. This printed on delta shield patterns make you look a little like a blue scaly beast. The polyester fabric is very shiny and glares in a well lit room.

I am still trying to figure out how to smooth out the sleeves. The vinyl printed on ranking stripes stuck to each other and the packaging and so wrinkled and mangled no Starfleet officer would be caught dead in it (thank god it sin’t a red shirt). Speaking of sleeves, I will need to taper the ends at some point to as the sleeves are as wide at the wrists as they are at the armpit. Can we say, “baggy much”?

All in all grabbing a good costume like this from an online vendor like BuyCostumes.com is much easier on the wallet than buying a screen quality prop shirt that could run you $200-300. Works for me when I need to go to a con and pay higher and higher prices for autographs and other merch. I can still look the part, have fun and maybe have some money left over at the end of the event (who am I kidding it will all be spent).

Live Long and Party Often…I mean…Prosper.
