Reinhold Heil, Johnny Klimek And Tom Tykwer Earn Their First Golden Globe™ Nomination With Cloud Atlas.
Named Best Score By The Austin Film Critics Association
On Thursday, December 13th, the Hollywood Foreign Press announced the nominees for the 2013 Golden Globe Awards. Composers Reinhold Heil, Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer earned their first Golden Globe nomination for their original score for the film Cloud Atlas, which was named best score of 2012 by the Austin Film Critics Association.
On behalf of his co-composers, Heil said, “Thank you so much, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, for this nomination. We are deeply honored to have been placed in the company of some of the greatest film composers working today. And we are thrilled that we were able to work with such visionary filmmakers as Lana and Andy Wachowski and our friend and longtime collaborator, co-composer, and co-director Tom Tykwer.”
Music is a central part of the Frobisher narrative in Cloud Atlas story – the young composer struggles to complete his life’s work The Cloud Atlas Sextet. The theme recurrs through the different storylines serving as a connective piece.
“The melody needed to be strong and memorable. Once that melody existed the fun began: we put it through every variation we could think of, but always dominated by the movie’s needs,” said Heil. Whether heard on original piano, on vinyl in the 1970s, in Seoul 2144 played on the Erhu, or as Muzak at the Aurora House, the Cloud Atlas Sextet connects the storylines together as they move through time, with all its distinct pieces, moods and themes rhythmically merging into a whole.
“It’s a mark of hubris to write a score that can span centuries with music that’s powerful enough to be remembered through countless lives and deaths,” said Daniel Schweiger of FilmMusicMag.com, who named the score one of The Best Scores of 2012. “Seamlessly tying its divergent musical styles, stories and timelines together is a beautiful Cloud Atlas theme, music so believable in its classicism that a listener might think it was written by one of the great maestros.”
“The unique challenge of the Cloud Atlas score is its function as the connecting element for the six stories that are being told simultaneously, while playing in different parts of the world, different eras of history, and different genres of story telling,” Heil described. “To our knowledge nobody has faced this specific challenge before.”

ABOUT THE COMPOSERS
Tom Tykwer is one of Germany’s most exciting filmmakers and a triple threat (writer, director, composer). In 1999, he made his international breakthrough with the adrenaline-fuelled Run Lola Run, which, as well as directing, he also wrote and co-composed with Klimek and Heil. The film was both a commercial and critical success, going on to become the most successful German film of that year. He followed this with The Princess and the Warrior, and then with his first English-language film, Heaven. In 2006, Tykwer co-wrote and directed Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. His next film was the sleek thriller The International. Most recently he completed the German language film 3 (Drei).
Reinhold Heil was born in Germany and trained to become a classical pianist. While studying at the Berlin Music Academy, Heil became Nina Hagen’s keyboardist, co-writer, and co-producer and for the next few years honed his craft in what became the legendary Nina Hagen Band. After Hagen left the group, the remaining band members formed Spliff, one of Germany’s most successful rock bands of the 1980s.
Born in Australia, Johnny Klimek paid his dues in a series of gritty pub bands before migrating to Berlin to form the ‘80s pop ensemble “The Other Ones” with his siblings. He segued into the club music scene on his own in the ’90s, and, out of the latter emerged his creative marriages to both Heil and Tykwer.
Among Klimek and Heil’s credits are Killer Elite, the TV series Awake, One Hour Photo, the acclaimed TV series Deadwood, and the theme music for Without a Trace. Up next for the duo is I, Frankenstein, starring Bill Nighy and Aaron Eckhart, slated for release in 2013.
